Utility-Directed Allocation
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper considers the problem of allocating discrete resources according to utility functions reported by potential recipients and relates this abstract problem to resource allocation in a Utility Data Center (UDC). A simple integer program formulation, which generalizes well-known knapsack problems, permits a remarkable breadth of expression while retaining clarity and analytic tractability. In the UDC context, this formulation allows us to incorporate factors such as resource scarcity, user demand, and operating costs in a unified framework. It is equally applicable to longand short-term allocation. If applied to short-term dynamic re-allocation it allows SLA violation penalties to be enforced or relaxed, thereby permitting principled preemption of resources. Retrospective analysis of past allocator inputs can guide economically-optimal capacity expansion. The proposed problem formulation is suitable both for UDCs that operate exclusively within an enterprise and for those that sell access to computational resources to external customers. The latter case involves multiple divergent interests contending for scarce resources, and this paper surveys the economic issues that arise in such situations and relevant literature, e.g., on mechanism design and auction theory. This paper describes the expressive power of the proposed problem formulation, considers the computational requirements of solution methods, outlines connections with economics literature, and compares the proposed formulation with other UDC allocation schemes. It also presents preliminary computational results showing that a commercial integer-program solver can quickly find near-optimal solutions to random problem instances of reasonable size.

A New Fairness Index and Novel Approach for QoS-Aware Resource Allocation in LTE Networks Based on Utility Functions
Resource allocation techniques have recently appeared as a widely recognized feature in LTE networks. Most of existing approaches in resource allocation focus on maximizing network’s utility functions. The great potential of utility function in improving resource allocation and enhancing fairness and mean opinion score (MOS) indexes has attracted large efforts over the last few years. In this p...
متن کاملFuzzy transferable-utility games: a weighted allocation and related results
By considering the supreme-utilities among fuzzy sets and the weights among participants simultaneously, we introduce the supreme-weighted value on fuzzy transferable-utility games. Further, we provide some equivalent relations to characterize the family of all solutions that admit a potential on weights. We also propose the dividend approach to provide alternative viewpoint for the potential a...
متن کاملMulti-objective and Scalable Heuristic Algorithm for Workflow Task Scheduling in Utility Grids
To use services transparently in a distributed environment, the Utility Grids develop a cyber-infrastructure. The parameters of the Quality of Service such as the allocation-cost and makespan have to be dealt with in order to schedule workflow application tasks in the Utility Grids. Optimization of both target parameters above is a challenge in a distributed environment and may conflict one an...
متن کاملUtility-directed resource allocation in virtual desktop clouds
User communities are rapidly transitioning their ‘‘traditional desktops’’ that have dedicated hardware and software installations into ‘‘virtual desktop clouds’’ (VDCs) that are accessible via thin-clients. To allocate and manage VDC resources for Internet-scale desktop delivery, existing works focus mainly on managing server-side resources based on utility functions of CPU and memory loads, an...
متن کاملPower allocation rules under fuzzy behavior and multicriteria situations
In this paper, we adopt supreme-utilities among fuzzy level (decision) vectors to propose a power allocation rule, its efficient extension and normalization in the framework of multicriteria fuzzy transferable-utility (TU) games. We also provide several axiomatic results to present the rationality for these rules. Based on different viewpoints, we introduce different formulations and dynamic re...
